๐Ÿพ How I Fell for a Frenchie โ€” Zero’s Tail Tale Begins

Before I met Zero, Iโ€™ll admitโ€ฆ I didnโ€™t know much about French Bulldogs.

Back in Korea, my family raised a Maltese, and most of the dogs I saw around were small, fluffy pupsโ€”Maltese, Poodles, or the kind youโ€™d picture when someone says โ€œcute dog.โ€ You know, the ones that look like little plushies ๐Ÿงธ.

But after moving to Australia, I started noticing a totally different kind of pup.

There were small, grey furballs with ears that popped up and flopped down, solid little tanks of dogs with snub noses who snorted their way past me. I didnโ€™t even know their breed back thenโ€”but one, in particular, kept catching my eye.

French Bulldogs.

But hereโ€™s the funny partโ€ฆ I was kind of scared of them at first ๐Ÿ˜….

Something about the word โ€œbulldogโ€ felt intimidating. Their deep-set eyes, chunky build, and the way their paws thudded on the ground when they walkedโ€”it made me imagine all sorts of nonsense like, โ€œIf one bit me, would I still have my arm?โ€ (๐Ÿ’€ Totally irrational, I know.)

๐Ÿš— The Day We Found Zero

One day, I stumbled upon a puppy adoption post on a Korean community site here in Australia.

There was a photo of five little pups in a rowโ€”but one, in particular, caught my eye. She had his paws resting on the edge and was gazing up at the breeder with the softest eyes. That was it. Thatโ€™s the one. Iโ€™m getting him.

(Plot twist: That pup was already adopted. ๐Ÿ’”)

The breeder sent over updated photos of the remaining three. Two were brown, and one was a gray-and-white mix, sitting quietly in the back with a shiny bling bling little gaze.

That gray baby behind? Yup. That was Zero.

He barely even showed up in the first photo, but now? I can’t imagine seeing anyone but him.

The very next morning, my husband and I were up at 8am, nervous and excited, buzzing with questions like:

โ€œAre we really getting a dog?โ€

โ€œWhat are Frenchies even like?!โ€

We met the breeder at West Ryde Park, and Iโ€™ll never forget the sightโ€”he came walking up with a bright blue basket, three tiny pups inside. ๐Ÿงบ๐Ÿ’จ

Zero had one floppy ear, looking all sweet and calm (spoiler: heโ€™s not ๐Ÿ˜ˆ), and we instantly fell in love. The two brown pups were a lot more talkative. Zero just looked at us with that face and boom. Done deal.

๐Ÿ›’ Puppy Starter Kit โ€” Day One Essentials

After scooping him up, we made a quick detour to the nearby Petbarn and Kmart for the longest puppy haul of our lives. It was our first time stepping foot into a pet store in Australia, and wowโ€”we were clueless!

Hereโ€™s what we got (with some affiliate links where possible!):

  1. Food: Started with the breederโ€™s leftovers, then transitioned to Royal Canin French Bulldog Puppy Dog Food
  2. Pee Pads: Kmart, $20 for 100 pads (Kmart)
  3. Crate, Bed, Bowls: All Kmart โ€” the bed we picked based on touch & softness
  4. Water Bottle: We worried about his flat snout, so we bought a hanging water bottle like the kind hamsters use (Amazon)
  5. Toys: โ€ฆtoo many to count ๐Ÿ˜‚
  6. Health: Flea/tick/worm tablets initially, but the vet said with regular vaccinations, they werenโ€™t needed (we ended up tossing the meds unused ๐Ÿ˜…)

๐Ÿ’ฌ Iโ€™ll be linking exact items we used throughout the blog โ€” check them out if you’re prepping for your own pup!

Funny story. We were tossing around name ideasโ€”Coke, Cola (we drink Coke Zero like itโ€™s water lol), but when we called out โ€œZeroโ€โ€ฆ he looked up right at us. Locked eyes.

That was it. Name chosen. โœ”๏ธ

Now, โ€œZeroโ€ holds so much more meaning, but weโ€™ll save that story for another post. ๐Ÿ˜‰

And thatโ€™s how we met the tiny, floppy-eared Frenchie who completely flipped my idea of what โ€œa dogโ€ could be.

Turns outโ€ฆ what you donโ€™t know can seem scary at first. But once you get close, that fear? It usually turns into love. ๐Ÿ’ž

Welcome to Zeroโ€™s world ๐Ÿพ
