Best Dog-Friendly Beaches Near Sydney (2026) — A Drive from Strathfield

erfect for dog owners looking for off-leash beaches within 1 hour of Strathfield

If you live around Strathfield and have been wondering where to take your dog for a proper beach day, you’re in the right place. I’ve done the research (and some of the driving!) so you don’t have to guess. Below are five of the best dog-friendly beaches within about an hour’s drive from Strathfield, with everything you need to know before you go: off-leash hours, parking, nearby cafes, and yes! whether you’ll need to pay a toll.

Quick note: I’ve personally visited Kurnell (Silver Beach) and can vouch for it firsthand. The other beaches are included based on thorough research and community reviews, so I’ll note clearly where my personal experience ends and the research begins.

🐾 #1 — Silver Beach, Kurnell (aka Kurnell Dog Beach)

The #1 Pick — Truly the Easiest Dog Beach in Sydney

📍 312 Prince Charles Parade, Kurnell NSW 2231 🚗 ~35–45 min from Strathfield

This is the beach I keep going back to, and it’s easy to see why it’s so popular. Silver Beach sits on the calm shores of Botany Bay, which means no waves, no surf, and perfectly shallow water — great for dogs who are nervous swimmers or just learning. My dog absolutely loves it here.

✅ Off-Leash Rules

Dogs are allowed off-leash 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year in the designated zone — between the 3rd and 4th rock groynes at the western end of the beach (near Bonna Point Reserve car park). This is the official off-leash area confirmed by Sutherland Shire Council. Keep your dog strictly within this zone; the rest of Silver Beach is dogs-prohibited.

🅿️ Parking

Free and fairly spacious at the Bonna Point Reserve car park, right next to the beach. On hot weekends and public holidays it fills up fast — arrive early or look for street parking along Prince Charles Parade. Avoid the trailer/boat ramp zones or you may get a fine.

☕ Nearby Cafe

Cook @ Kurnell — a popular food van/cafe right across the road from the beach. Dog-friendly outdoor seating, plus water bowls for your pup. Open for breakfast and lunch most days (check their hours, as they may close Monday–Tuesday in winter). There’s also a dog-friendly water fountain right at the beach access point.

🚗 Toll Info (from Strathfield)

The most common route from Strathfield goes via King Georges Road → Rocky Point Road → Captain Cook Drive → Prince Charles Parade. This is mostly a toll-free route using surface roads. You may choose to use the M5 or M8 motorway to save time, which will incur a toll — but it’s not required. Always check Google Maps for the “avoid tolls” option if you want a toll-free drive.

💡 Tips from My Personal Experience

  • Arrive before 4pm on weekdays if you want a quieter experience. After 4pm and on weekends it becomes a full-on dog party — which is also wonderful if your dog is social!
  • Check the tide — low tide is the best time, as it reveals a huge expanse of flat sand.
  • The water is very shallow and calm, so it’s ideal for puppies, small breeds, or anxious dogs.
  • Rinse-off showers are available for your sandy pup so your car stays (relatively) clean.
  • Dogs are not allowed in Kamay Botany Bay National Park, so don’t try to continue your walk in that direction.

🐾 #2 — Greenhills Beach, Cronulla

Sydney’s Only Ocean-Facing Dog Beach — For Energetic Dogs

📍 24 Mitchell Road, Cronulla NSW 2230 (park at Don Lucas Reserve) 🚗 ~40–45 min from Strathfield

This is the only ocean-facing dog beach in the entire Sydney region, which makes it unique and very popular. Unlike Kurnell’s calm bay waters, this one has real waves and open ocean conditions — exciting for confident, energetic dogs.

✅ Off-Leash Rules

Time-restricted. Dogs are only permitted during:

  • Daylight Saving Time (Oct–Apr): Before 10am & After 4pm
  • Standard Time (Apr–Oct): Before 10am & After 3pm

Outside these hours, dogs are completely prohibited from the beach — not even on-leash. Rangers actively enforce this, so don’t risk a fine.

The off-leash zone is a 3km stretch of sand north of Gate 5, which is the only official entrance. You must keep your dog on-leash from the car park, across Wanda Reserve (the grass area), right up until you pass through Gate 5.

⚠️ Puffer fish warning: Puffer fish sometimes wash up on this beach and are fatal to dogs even when dead. Always scan the sand before letting your dog roam.

🅿️ Parking

Free car park at Don Lucas Reserve (end of Mitchell Road). Drive to the northern end of the car park for the shortest walk to Gate 5. It fills quickly on sunny weekends.

☕ Nearby Cafe

Top Shop at Wanda — corner of Mitchell Road and Links Avenue, a short walk from the car park. Open daily 7:45am–3pm for breakfast and lunch, and dog owners report receiving a warm welcome and even the occasional dog treat. For more options, the Cronulla town centre has several dog-friendly cafes including Next Door Cronulla.

🚗 Toll Info (from Strathfield)

Route from Strathfield goes via King Georges Road → Princes Highway → Kingsway → Mitchell Road. Mostly toll-free on surface roads. The M5 or M8 motorway options will incur tolls but save time — your choice.

💡 Things to Know

  • Best for confident, strong swimmers — waves and rip currents can be rough.
  • Not patrolled — swimming for humans is not recommended.
  • A 3km+ stretch means great for high-energy dogs who love to run.

🐾 #3 — Horderns Beach, Bundeena

Peaceful & Scenic — A True Nature Escape

📍 1–3 Crammond Ave, Bundeena NSW 2230 🚗 ~55–65 min from Strathfield

Bundeena is a tiny, tranquil village nestled between Port Hacking and the Royal National Park. This beach has a very different vibe from the others it’s quiet, lush, and feels like a proper nature escape. If you want a relaxed picnic-style beach day with your dog rather than a busy social scene, this is it.

✅ Off-Leash Rules

The hours change by season:

  • May to August (winter): Off-leash all day, Monday to Sunday ✅
  • September to April (summer/spring): Off-leash on weekdays only before 8:30am and after 4:30pm. Dogs must be on-leash between 8:30am–4:30pm on weekdays.
  • Weekends and public holidays September–April: Dogs prohibited on the beach entirely.

This makes Bundeena best visited in winter or on a weekday. Check the signage at Brighton Street, Horderns Lane or Liverpool Street entrances when you arrive.

🅿️ Parking

Street parking near the beach — limited, especially on weekends. There is some parking near the ferry ramp at the eastern end of the beach (near Brighton Street). Toilets are also available here.

Alternative: take the ferry! Cronulla Ferries runs a dog-friendly service from Cronulla to Bundeena (dogs must be on a leash). A fun way to get there if you’re up for an adventure.

☕ Nearby Cafe

Bundeena has a small but charming village with takeaway shops, a local cafe, and an ice cream shop, all a short walk from the beach.

🚗 Toll Info (from Strathfield)

Route via King Georges Road → Princes Highway → Bundeena Road → ferry, or drive all the way around via Farnell Avenue → Bundeena Drive. Mostly toll-free on surface roads. Some tolls may apply if using the M5/M8 motorway shortcut.

🐾 #4 — Rose Bay Dog Beach (Rose Bay Foreshore)

Best Accessibility & Views — Eastern Suburbs Vibes

📍 Between Percival Park & Dumaresq Reserve, Rose Bay NSW 2029 (search “Rose Bay Beach” on Google Maps) 🚗 ~45–55 min from Strathfield

Rose Bay Dog Beach is on Sydney Harbour — calm, protected water with stunning harbour views and city skyline in the background. It’s a completely different setting from the Sutherland beaches, with an upmarket Eastern Suburbs feel. Best for a morning visit followed by coffee at one of the many nearby cafes.

✅ Off-Leash Rules

The main beach (the sandy foreshore between Percival Park and Dumaresq Reserve) is off-leash 24 hours a day, 7 days a week — no time restrictions. This is the most convenient off-leash rule of any beach with true harbour access in Sydney.

Note: The adjacent Dumaresq Reserve (grassy area to the west) has restricted hours — off-leash only before 8:30am and after 4:30pm.

Access the beach from the end of Caledonian Road or via the steps down from New South Head Road. Dogs are not permitted in Percival Park.

🅿️ Parking

Street parking in the surrounding suburb — can be tricky any day of the week. Best bet is the car park on Dover Road. Come early to secure a spot.

☕ Nearby Cafes

Rose Bay is café paradise. Within short walking distance you’ll find Jezve Coffee (near the ferry wharf — outdoor seating, water bowls, QR code menus), Chargrill Charlie’s Rose Bay (great for a casual takeaway lunch), and several other dog-friendly options along New South Head Road.

🚗 Toll Info (from Strathfield)

The most likely route: Parramatta Road → City West Link → South Dowling Street → New South Head Road. This will likely involve the Eastern Distributor or M4 tunnel, which are tolled roads. To avoid tolls, use Parramatta Road all the way through — it’s slower but free. Factor in an extra 10–15 minutes for the toll-free route during off-peak times.

💡 Tide Tip

Low tide reveals a large sandy expanse — great for dogs who love to run. High tide is more compact but still lovely for a quick swim.

🐾 #5 — Sirius Cove Reserve, Mosman

Beach + Grassy Park Combo — Great for a Relaxed Full Day

📍 Sirius Cove Road, Mosman NSW 2088 🚗 ~50–65 min from Strathfield

Sirius Cove is a tucked-away gem on the Lower North Shore. It’s not just a beach — there’s a large grassy park directly behind the sand with picnic tables, free electric BBQs, a fenced kids’ playground, and harbour views. A perfect place if you want to make a full day of it.

✅ Off-Leash Rules

  • Weekdays (Mon–Fri): Off-leash all day ✅
  • Weekends & Public Holidays: Off-leash before 9am and after 4pm only. Between 9am–4pm, your dog must be on-leash.

Rangers do patrol, so it’s worth following the rules.

🅿️ Parking

Famously difficult, especially on weekends. There is a small pay-and-display car park at the reserve, but it fills up very quickly. Your best strategy is to arrive well before the off-leash window opens on weekends, or visit on a weekday. Otherwise, you’ll need to find street parking in surrounding residential streets and walk down. Note the road into the reserve is narrow — take it slow.

☕ Nearby Cafe

Frenchy’s Cafe — a charming spot with a dog-friendly patio, popular with locals after a swim. Also nearby along Military Road in Mosman you’ll find plenty of options.

🚗 Toll Info (from Strathfield)

Route via Parramatta Road → City West Link → Anzac Bridge → Military Road → Sirius Cove Road. Expect tolls on the Harbour Bridge/Tunnel or the M4/M8 if you go via the city. For a toll-free option, cross via the Anzac Bridge and head north along Military Road — this avoids most toll roads. Still check Google Maps using “avoid tolls” mode for the most current routing.

📌 General Tips for Any Dog Beach Trip in Sydney

  1. Always check the Sutherland Shire Council or local council website before you go — rules can change.
  2. Pick up after your dog. Bins are available at most beaches. This is what keeps these beaches open for everyone.
  3. Voice control matters. Off-leash doesn’t mean out of control. You should be able to recall your dog at all times.
  4. Bring fresh water for your dog — especially in summer.
  5. Check the tide before visiting Kurnell or Rose Bay — low tide is best at both.
  6. Rinse your dog before getting in the car — most beaches have showers or hoses nearby.
  7. Watch for puffer fish at Greenhills Beach — they are extremely toxic to dogs.
