🍴 Homemade Dog Treats for Zero: One Simple Recipe, Lots of Tail Wags

Sometimes, all it takes is one homemade treat to make your dog’s day.
I wanted to whip up something special for Zero β™₯️ Nothing too fancy, just something made with love and good ingredients.

We only snapped one photo of the final result (oops!), but the real memory is how fast he gobbled it up. 😊

πŸ₯© What Went In: Simple, Whole Ingredients

Here’s a quick list of what I used to make these protein-packed, veggie-rich treats:

Proteins:
– Beef
– Chicken
– Lamb
– Turkey

πŸ₯© Proteins – How to Cook
Fully cook each type of meat (beef, chicken, lamb, turkey) with no added salt, pepper, or seasoning.
Once cooked thoroughly, let them cool completely before mixing with other ingredients.

Veggies:
– Kale, Broccoli
– Carrot
– Cabbage
– Potato, Sweet Potato
– Pumpkin

πŸ₯• Veggies – How to Prep
Peel the carrots, pumpkin, potatoes, and sweet potatoes, chop them into small pieces, lightly boil or steam them, then toss everything into a chopper and pulse until finely minced.

Fruits:
– Apple (peeled & seeds removed)

🍎 Fruits – How to Prep
Peel the apple, remove the seeds and core, and chop finely using a chopper just like the veggies.

πŸ§‘β€πŸ³ How to Combine

Once all veggies and fruits are chopped and ready:

  • Mix all the non-protein ingredients together first.
  • Then, combine them with the cooked meat at a veggie-to-protein ratio of 7:3.

πŸ’‘ Example Ratios:

  • 1kg raw beef β†’ 800g cooked β†’ add approx. 1.8kg veggies
  • 500g raw chicken β†’ 350g cooked β†’ add approx. 800g veggies

Mix each batch separately based on meat type, portion out into containers, and store in the freezer.
We personally portioned 400g per container (for 2 meals a day, 200g per meal).
To keep things fun and varied for Zero, we labeled the containers with masking tape (e.g., B for beef, C for chicken, L for lamb, T for turkey) and rotated the flavors daily.

πŸ’‘ Why I Chose These Ingredients

  • Beef & Lamb: Great sources of protein, iron, and essential amino acids. Zero always responds well to these.
  • Chicken & Turkey: Lean proteins that are easy to digest, perfect for sensitive stomachs.
  • Carrots & Sweet Potatoes: Natural sweetness, loaded with beta-carotene and fiber.
  • Kale & Cabbage: Full of antioxidants and great for skin health.
  • Potatoes: Mild and filling, and they help bind the treats.
  • Apples: A crisp touch of sweetness and a great source of vitamin C (always seedless!).
  • Pumpkin: Gentle on the tummy, rich in fiber, and supports digestion.
(Some say it makes poop smell stronger! might help deter poop-eating! Worked for Zero during that phase. πŸ˜…)

🐢 The Verdict?

Zero loved them. Especially the ones with lamb and sweet potato.
He even hovered around the kitchen while they cooled. Always a good sign.

I plan to make another batch soon (and remember to take more photos next time!).
Until then, I’m just happy knowing he’s enjoying something I made just for him. πŸ’™

P.S. If you’re planning to try homemade treats, always check with your vet first. Especially when introducing new proteins or veggies.
